En 1909, un joven escritor llamado Julius Bedford y un excéntrico científico llamado Cavor viajan a la Luna décadas antes de la carrera espacial. El milagro lo consiguen gracias a la cavorita, una sustancia que elimina la gravedad y que los dos protagonistas usan para construir una esfera que los lleve hasta el satélite. Allí son capturados por los selenitas, criaturas con aspecto de hormiga e intenciones poco claras.
